Vivid: Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes, Melbourne, Australia

On Brighton beachfront, a twenty minute drive from Melbourne, sit 82 brightly-painted bathing boxes.

Dating back to the early 1900s, these small wooden structures, without electricity or running water, were a place for Victorian beachgoers to change into their heavy, layered swimwear.

Today, they’re frequently photographed, privately-owned, tourist attractions.

Usually, they stay in families, but sometimes a box is listed for sale.

In 2019, Box 15 sold for $340,000.

A lot of money for a piece of property you can’t actually live in.
