The Inspector of Nuisances: Maryborough, Australia

In the mid-1800s, the population of Australian country towns grew, and with this growth came problems. Be it farm animals meandering down Main Street, mysterious odours emanating from drains or butchers selling spoiled meat to the masses, issues arose that were too trifling for the police, but too troublesome to be ignored. Enter the Inspector of Nuisances, council appointed dogsbodies, who spent their days shooing pigs off pavements, keeping renegade retailers in line and bringing small town shenanigans to a standstill.
