Intricately designed, brightly coloured and displayed on pedestals, Spirit Houses are homes for the spirits and celestial beings of Thailand.

Whether they be in front of a shop or tucked away beside a home or hotel, these supernatural abodes can range from cute and modest, to large ostentatious complexes.

The most elaborate of which are typically found near banks and luxurious five-star resorts.

Many of the larger structures also incorporate shrines to other religious deities in their design.

In addition to giving the supernatural a sweet place to live, the Thai people also leave offerings of food, drinks, garlands of flowers and lit incense at the doors of these mystical mini mansions.

You might also see small figurines of horses and people dotted around the spirit house.

These gifts express gratitude to the spectral guardians of the land, and ensure the continued harmony between the mortal and ethereal realms.
